Libyan troops took control of the coastal city of Benghazi after three years of fighting, according to Khalifa Haftar, commander of Libyan National Army in a televised speech on Wednesday, adding the army had completely cleared out the remaining pockets of terrorists and liberated the city.
Earlier before their announcement, forces made rapid progress through the seafront district of Sabri, using heavy artillery to blast their way through some of the final pockets of resistance.
The Libyan National Army now controls major eastern oil ports as well as a large airbase in the south of the country.
Libya has been trapped in cycles of chaos and political division since civil war broke out in 2011, despite the signing of a UN-backed peace agreement and the establishment of a unity government.
