Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sent New Year greetings to overseas Chinese in Japan through Chubun, a Chinese media in the country.
In his message published on Thursday, Abe noted Japan and China held many high-level dialogues last year, and he had talks with Chinese leaders last November and they exchanged views frankly.
He said this year marks the 40th anniversary of Japan and China signing the Peace and Friendship Treaty. He reiterated hope that people from both sides can this year feel a great improvement in bilateral ties, expecting to improve Japan-China relations further through high-level visits.
In the past year, said the Japanese leader, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Japan surpassed seven million for the first time. The new panda cub Xiang Xiang born at the Ueno Zoo is popular among Japanese citizens.
"And this year, Japan and China will continue to promote cooperation and exchange in all fields such as politics, economy, culture, sports and tourism. I hope overseas Chinese in Japan can assist the further development of Japan-China relations. Happy New Year!"
