What's Old is New: Han Chinese clothing witnesses a 'comeback'
Updated 17:14, 09-Jul-2019
One of Asia's oldest known styles is back. Han Chinese clothing, silk outfits rich with Chinese embroidery and designs are seeing a "comeback" among some of the nation's youngest people. On the streets, the subway, or in a park overseas, you may find Chinese youngsters wearing these traditional clothes that have hardly been seen in the last millennium. CGTN's Li Jianhua talks to some Han Chinese clothing lovers.
A bit anachronistic. These two girls – wearing traditional Han Chinese clothing, popular thousands of years ago – are drinking tea in 21st-century China. Silk clothing with Chinese embroidery complete with archaic headwear. It may look a bit costume-ish, but it's becoming everyday trend for an increasing number of young Chinese.
JIANG YUE HAN CHINESE CLOTHING FAN "Ever since I was a kid, many have been saying I'm stuck in the past – my habits, my manners, and my thoughts are all sort of anachronistic. I myself don't know why. Maybe it's my fate."
CHEN LIN HAN CHINESE CLOTHING FAN "I appreciate my family's support. They don't reject the idea of me wearing the type of clothing many others do. I should say they don't agree with it 100 percent, but they don't reject it outright or say it's bizarre."
Many Chinese tea houses are integrating tea with Han Chinese clothing to attract young customers. Prices range from some 40 to 1500 US dollars or higher.
CAI JINBAO PRESIDENT, XIAMEN HANFU CULTURE EXCHANGE ASSOCIATION "This one is very convenient and it suits you. The right lapel is placed on top of the left one. This one uses a lace to fasten the clothing instead of buttons. The sleeves are smaller – very convenient. For any kind of clothing – Han Chinese and others – people are likely to be attracted to the appearance. But for Han Chinese clothing, the culture beyond its looks and designs is also fascinating and deserves study."
Thanks to the government's efforts to revive traditional culture, the historic costumes of the Han ethnic majority are enjoying a "renaissance". The traditions of Han Chinese culture are being brought back to some classrooms.
CAI JINBAO PRESIDENT, XIAMEN HANFU CULTURE EXCHANGE ASSOCIATION "40 years of Reform and Opening up has enabled most Chinese to enjoy a moderately prosperous life, which in turn lets more of us pursue spiritual fulfilment. Chinese people used to be into the so-called 'good lives' of the West. But the comeback of traditional Han Chinese culture is a demonstration of Chinese people pursuing a sense of belonging culturally."
Cai says the problem now is many don't know the culture behind the clothing, hence they wear some clothes that don't suit their status. Some business professionals are also making use of the trend by renting and selling these clothes in bulk. Whether the Han Chinese clothing is simply a flash in the pan or an official comeback remains to be seen. LJH, CGTN, XIAMEN.
