MH370 Four Years On: Families of missing passengers attend memorial event
[]
It's been nearly four years since Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 inexplicably disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Loved ones of the 239 people on board the plane have been gathering in Kuala Lumpur to mark the anniversary. And for the first time, many of them believe searchers may be close to finding the missing plane. Rian Maelzer was at the remembrance event.
RIAN MAELZER KUALA LUMPUR "Last year's anniversary came after the Malaysian government had indefinitely suspended the search for MH370. And theme of that event was to urge authorities to "Search On". This year, there is less anger and frustration. On a no-find, no-fee basis, a company called Ocean Infinity is now searching the area identified as the most likely final resting place of the plane, based on a possible debris field sighted after the crash and where confirmed debris has washed up. This year's theme is "It's not history. It's the future."
GRACE NATHAN DAUGHTER OF PASSENGER ANNE DAISY "The way I feel now, I don't want any one to have to go through this. And That is why it has become so important that we prevent this from happening again. And I truly and wholeheartedly believe that MH370 is not history. It is the future because I want all of us to fly safely."
Next of kin came from as far away as India and China.
K.S. NARENDRAN HUSBAND OF PASSENGER CHANDRIKA "All I can say at this point is that we have to remain optimistic. I don't know if we have any alternative."
Government officials also addressed the audience.
MOHD KHAIRUL ADIB ABD RAHMAN DEPUTY DIRECTOR GENERAL, MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT "At the international level, Malaysia with the support of many other countries, continues to advocate at the various ICAO forums and meetings to remedy the weaknesses so as to prevent any recurrences. It is a high price that we Malaysians and all those on board MH370 have to pay so others can fly with clear mind."
The organizers thanked those who joined them in pushing for the resumption of the search. And the families will hope that by next year's anniversary, they and the world will finally know more about how and why MH370 ended up in the southern Indian Ocean and that they will be able to move toward achieving some kind of closure.
