Shanghai's overtime win against Beijing means they have won 5 of their first 6 games, with much of the credit going to their international duo of Jimmer Fredette and Luis Scola. The Argentine center might be far from his peak years in the NBA, but is providing a strong inside presence in his first campaign with the Sharks. Damion Jones has the story.
Luis Scola began the new CBA season looking to prove the doubters wrong, as he joined the Shanghai Sharks after spending his initial campaign in China with the Shanxi Brave Dragons. The Argentine's numbers might be down, as he's averaging 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game after six contests with his new squad, compared to 27.7 and 13.8 last winter, but the 38-year-old power forward remains a valuable contributor off the ball, as he fills the lane and helps create more space for his teammates to score.
Due to the CBA's rules on how many minutes competitors from overseas can spend on the court in each game, Scola usually takes a back seat to Shanghai's main offensive catalyst, former International MVP Jimmer Fredette. But when the South American is called upon, he tries to make full use of every second he's on the floor, especially since playing time was one of his biggest reasons for moving to China.
The addition of Scola has given Fredette even more room to flourish on offense, while also helping further his all-around evolution, in his third season with the Sharks. The American point guard continues to create for his teammates, while coming up with new tricks to score in the clutch as well.
Fredette's 50-point outburst in Friday's overtime win against Beijing was his best effort of the new campaign, and he's now averaging 37.8 per contest. While the Ducks were neck-and-neck with Shanghai through four quarters, the 29-year-old carried the Sharks on his shoulders in the extra session to seal a 118-113 victory, which some of their fans no doubt see as an early measure of revenge, against the squad that eliminated them in the first round of last winter's CBA Playoffs.
