So why has Singapore been chosen as the venue for the upcoming historic meeting? CGTN's Miro Lu takes a look at some of the reasons behind the decision.
Just weeks ago, the Trump-Kim meeting was on the brink of cancellation. Now the much-anticipated summit finally kicking off here in Singapore. Even before the confirmation, many have already speculated that the city-state would be the top choice.
LAWRENCE LOH, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE BUSINESS SCHOOL "First of all, the country is politically neutral. In other words, the US and North Korea do not see themselves as being threatened if they come to this location for the meeting. Secondly, I think with the track record, Singapore is somehow moving towards being the Geneva of the East for international meeting."
Traditionally, high-level meetings have been held in Shangri-la Hotel. But this time, there's going to be a change.
MIRO LU SINGAPORE "The summit will instead be held at the Capella Hotel here in Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's southern coast. This island was once a pirate hangout. Now it is a popular destination with beaches, lush greenery, a casino and two golf courses."
The colonial style Capella Hotel has over 100 luxury guestrooms. In preparation for the summit, the US and DPRK delegations had earlier met here to work out logistics. The choice of Capella Hotel has surprised many, and observers think other factors come into play for the decision.
GRAHAM ONG-WEBB, RESEARCH FELLOW S. RAJARATNAM SCHOOL OF INT'L STUDIES, NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIV. "Capella is especially a good choice because in addition to being secure, it also has the right aesthetic, the right looks, for receiving two high level dignitaries, head of states of respective countries. From an optical standpoint, in terms of media coverage, public perception, it's important an event is held in a grand way, with a very nice backdrop, in addition to being secured, because it is a historical moment after all."
Singapore has been ranked as one of the top destinations to host international conferences. The country is likely to get a further boost in its status, as more than 2500 journalists are gathering from all over the world.
KEVIN WEE, SENIOR LECTURER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, NANYANG POLYTECHNIC "Singapore has already established itself as one of the best convention centres in the world. What this event does, because it was conducted and prepared, sometimes it's on, sometimes it's off, then it's on again, and within this short period of time, I guess the main message we can send is that we respond to these changes and still provide services which is of world class standard."
With less than a week to go, Singapore is getting itself ready for this high profile summit and the small city state is certainly going to be remembered as a part of this important moment in history. Miro Lu, CGTN, Singapore.
