Two more crew members have been pulled alive from a capsized Chinese ship off Malaysia's west coast. The sand-dredger JBB Rong Chang 8 capsized Wednesday morning in the Strait of Malacca. One crew member is confirmed dead, five more – all Chinese nationals – have been rescued. But 12 more crew, including 10 Chinese, remain missing. Rian Maelzer has the latest.
RIAN MAELZER MUAR, MALAYSIA "It was a welcome sight for townspeople who gathered near the pier, and for those assisting the frantic search for survivors on board the capsized sand dredger. Friday afternoon a boat brought ashore a crew member, a Chinese national, dehydrated but alive. A short while later, a second boat with a second Chinese survivor. Both were rushed to the nearby Muar Hospital. They are reported to be in stable condition."
SANIFAH YUSOF MALAYSIAN MARITIME ENFORCEMENT AGENCY "Today we found two victims in the engine room. This is thanks to cooperation between our divers and our whole team here. Water had come into the engine compartment, but there was a still an air pocket so they were able to breathe."
Divers are facing treacherous conditions working in dark, narrow areas filled with floating debris and a lot of diesel fuel mixed with the water. The ship has been towed to shallow water a couple of kilometres off the Malaysia's western coast to try to make the search less dangerous and increase the chances of finding more survivors.
