Panama's Vice President Isabel de Saint Malo, who has recently returned from Beijing, says her country's president will soon travel to China. The two countries announced the establishment of diplomatic relations earlier this week, as Panama severed its long-standing relations with Taipei.
Saint Malo told CGTN’s Roee Ruttenberg that Panama’s economy is open to the world and China is the second-largest user of the Panama Canal. Since the Canal represents the gateway to the Atlantic for China, she believes that Panama can be an entry point to Latin America and the Caribbean.
She also said that the Chinese community in Panama is strong, and they have been an important part of Panama’s economy and development. She expressed hope that this establishment of diplomatic relations with China will open new possibilities for the Chinese community.
