China's commerce ministry says trade issues with the US should be resolved practically and diplomatically and urged the US to "make the right decision". Reporter Wang Hui was at a press conference earlier today and has more.
Washington's plans to raise tariffs on Chinese goods appears to be unpopular on both sides of the Pacific.
A recent hearing held by the Office of US Trade Representatives drew attention from China's Ministry of Commerce.
A ministry spokesman says 90 percent of those at the hearing opposed further US tariff hikes.
Sentiments shared by American and Chinese companies alike.
GAO FENG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE COMMERCE MINISTRY "China is urging the US to listen to our industries and consumers, and their own. We hope they will take the cooperation between the two sides seriously, take the interests of both people seriously, and make the right decision."
Since the trade spat was triggered in late March, the two countries have imposed 25 percent more tariffs on each other's products worth 50 billion US dollars.
To resolve the dispute, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen met with his American counterpart last week in Washington DC.
It was the fourth round of negotiations between the two countries. I asked a relevant question at the press conference.
WANG HUI BEIJING "How was the new round of negotiation? Did you reach any consensus? How does Beijing view the current trade dispute, and what's your prognosis of the future? Do you have any plans to continue the talks?"
GAO FENG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE COMMERCE MINISTRY "The two nations had constructive and candid communication. Beijing always believes the economic and trade cooperation between the two sides is complementary, mutually beneficial and can achieve a win-win result. But the US has acted arbitrarily and triggered the trade war, which was not what China wanted to see. The two sides agreed to keep contact on the next arrangement."
WANG HUI BEIJING "The Ministry of Commerce also said America's hard approach and pressure won't faze China, nor will it resolve any problems. Beijing hopes the two countries will have equal, credible and pragmatic dialogues to resolve disputes and maintain a mutually beneficial trade relationship. Wang Hui, CGTN, Beijing."
