The Global Mobile Internet Conference will open tomorrow in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. Industry leaders from the likes of Facebook, Huawei and Tencent are expected to discuss the latest trends in AI, robotics and 5G. Ahead of the three-day event, our reporter Omar Khan sat down with George Zhao, the president of Honor, a smartphone brand owned by Huawei. He shared his views on the global smartphone market, and how the brand is growing.
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "It should be based on the product itself, service and the user experience. So I translate these key factors to win the competition, as its innovation, quality and service. So you can see that even in the Q1 this year, the market is decreasing. But I will say for Honor and Huawei, in this market, we keep growing."
OMAR KHAN CGTN REPORTER "What is the competitive advantage you would say that Honor and Huawei have, in regards to other competitors, what makes you guys be able to strive forward and make those developments?"
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "In the camera technology, in the battery, in the telecommunications, and in the display, all of these aspects, so we have a lot of R&D resource year by year focusing on this domain, and developed our key innovation capabilities. So day by day, we win the reputation. I would say that in many markets, Honor products, NPS, the score is the top level."
OMAR KHAN CGTN REPORTER "Why is Honor pursuing a younger generation for its target market?"
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "The young generation always pursues something fresh, something new, they want to keep challenging something. So when we focus on the young segment, and then we will keep our brand and technology to move forward faster."
OMAR KHAN CGTN REPORTER "How is Honor also looking to diversify its range of products it creates? Perhaps within the range of the internet of things, how can you talk about that?"
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "Honor focuses on AI capabilities for quite a long time. So AI, the processing capability, is number one in the world. That we will bring this, I mean, this special technology to the Honor 9X. So there's no competitor. So we win the battle, we win the competition that we want to use innovation and quality."
OMAR KHAN CGTN REPORTER "It's inevitable to talk about 5G technologies. How do you see China's role in developing 5G tech, and second part, how will Honor incorporate 5G technology into its upcoming handsets?"
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "China will be the largest 5G market in the future, that will be 100 billion US dollars from the operator's side. Our 5G product is already in a lab test stage. 5G has the SA and NSA mode, and for us, Honor will support both, SA and NSA."
OMAR KHAN CGTN REPORTER "Of course Huawei and Chinese tech giants, they face a bit of, obstacles, globally, how do you view that and do you think this is something we'll no longer have to worry about one day?"
GEORGE ZHAO PRESIDENT, HONOR "So we deliver the best product, and also based on our technology. And also we say, facing difficulties, we will smile to everything and will face them."
