China plans to launch its first satellite for its Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite system, which is expected to be completed by 2023. The satellite constellation system will enable mobile communication to be accessible in all places, said Zhang Hongtai, president of the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) on Wednesday.
The system, named "Hongyan" – which literally translates to "swan goose" – will consist of more than 300 satellites and data processing centers.
When completed, the satellite communication network will replace the ground-based network and allow a mobile phone to be connected anywhere on the planet, including in remote deserts or at sea, according to the CASC.
