Tokyo and London are nearly 10-thousand kilometers apart. But Londoners can now experience Japan at their doorstep. From bonsai trees to freshly-made sushi, this cultural centre aims to serve up all things Japanese.
A 100-pound hand-crafted nail clipper, traditional tea cups, and paintbrushes. The Japan House brings together food, art, design and technology from Japan.
The centre bills itself as a "new home" for Japanese creativity, innovation and business in Britain. Included at the three-floor building is an exhibition space, which currently shows sculptures by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto.
On the top floor is an "immersive" restaurant serving sushi and sake, created by Japanese chef Akira Shimizu.
KOJI TSURUOKA JAPAN'S AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN "The British economy is doing very well, and hopefully they will do even better, and that will be also a great attraction for continuing Japanese investment in UK. There are more than 1,000 companies operating currently in UK, they are intending to continue to do that. Therefore I believe Japan House will be a great promoter of bilateral business and economic relations as well."
Interior designer Katayama Masamichi says the centre's aesthetic is based on 'tokonoma' - a built-in area of a traditional Japanese tea room that displays artistic items to entertain guests.
This London location is the latest addition to two other Japan House centres in Los Angeles and Sao Paolo.
