The knife-wielding man who killed one person and injured six others in a supermarket in Hamburg was a "known Islamist but not a Jihadist," said German police on Saturday during a press conference.
The attacker, a 26-year-old United Arab Emirates (UAE) born Palestinian, has been identified as Ahmad A.. He's a failed asylum seeker who arrived in Germany in 2015.
Police said he acted alone and was religiously motivated, adding that he appeared to suffer from psychological problems.
The attacker stormed a supermarket on Friday and began stabbing shoppers with a kitchen knife, killing one and injuring six others, before running off.
He was later detained by police near the scene.
Police have searched the attacker's shelter in the city but there's no clear evidence that he had any accomplices or that he was involved in a terror organization or network.
It has yet to be determined what his motivations were.
