As calm starts to return to Zhuhai city, navigation in nearby waters is still partly suspended. He Weiwei follows a maritime patrol crew trying to help the city get back to normal.
Sea winds and tides remain strong even following the departure of Typhoon Mangkhut.
HE WEIWEI ZHUHAI "The Zhuhai maritime authority has deployed patrolling vessels to check nearby waters along the coastline of Zhuhai, to see when navigation can be resumed."
They have two major tasks, to check water depth along the routes, and track locations of over 20 buoys, or navigation markers.
SUN XIAOGUANG GANGKOU BRANCH COMMISSIONER, ZHUHAI MARITIME SAFETY ADMINISTRATION "This is our online monitoring platform. At least 15 buoys were blown away from their original spots. We are going to try and find them, and send a fixing vessel tomorrow to fix them back."
A single patrolling trip takes between two and three hours. Special devices on the vessel are used to monitor water depth instantly.
SUN XIAOGUANG GANGKOU BRANCH COMMISSIONER, ZHUHAI MARITIME SAFETY ADMINISTRATION "Every time a typhoon comes, it affects navigation routes. Some places are silted up, therefore the water is too shallow for big ships. We will monitor the situation closely to send warnings to nearby ships."
As of Monday evening, crew members have patrolled 30 nautical miles. As weather conditions improve in the coming days, navigation will resume. HWW, CGTN, ZHUHAI.
