It's been nearly two years since the Xiong'an New Area near Beijing was set up. It's meant to attract high-end industries and take on some of the capital city's non-essential functions. How will Xiong'an succeed? Our reporter Ning Hong has been following some of the first newcomers there.
Yang Jingzhou is one of the first new settlers in Xiong'an. Being a material scientist, he started a company there, working on bio 3d Printing.
YANG JINGZHOU, FOUNDER DAZHOU-TECH "Since I came here, I felt the awareness of this technology is increasing in this region. We are not just planning to found a company here. I hope we could lead the development of this strategic emerging industry."
Yang is confident about his company, as the positive list of Xiong'an has made it quite clear that his company is welcome here.
WANG JINYING, HEAD SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, HEBEI UNIVERSITY "Xiong'an will harbor some non-core functions of Beijing, but those industries should be high-end, integrated technologies and R&D."
Earlier this year, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that Xiong'an is also open to the world.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "The next stage of building Xiong'an will include attracting more international talents, technologies, investments and projects."
NING HONG XIONG'AN NEW AREA "Like Shenzhen and Pudong, Xiong'an is also a test. Authorities insist it will not be a metropolis, but a city that sets the bar for how other urban areas develop across China in the future."
City planners are looking for ways to make Xiong'an more attractive.
YIN HUILIANG, DIRECTOR PLANNING RESEARCH CENTER, CHINA ACADEMY OF URBAN PLANNING & DESIGN "While building and developing the New Area, we hope the city planning could provide a favorable environment for these talents to live and work in."
As the basic infrastructure in Xiong'an continues to improve. Yang is looking to boost the development of his company, including industrializing some products. Yet he is not without concerns.
YANG JINGZHOU, FOUNDER DAZHOU-TECH "For us, one of the things we pay more attention to is the soft environment, it is about what policies the city will have to attract high-end talents to start businesses here."
The success of a city depends on the accomplishments of each individual. As Yang is devoted to the career he has chosen here, he's also confident that he will succeed. Ning Hong, CGTN, Xiong'an New Area.
