President Xi Jinping has restated China's "unswerving" commitment to the "one country, two systems" constitutional arrangement which guarantees a measure of autonomy to Hong Kong.
Xi made the remarks Friday during a meeting in Beijing with Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
He said the key to the success of "one country, two systems" is to combine the central government's overall jurisdiction over Hong King with the territory's high degree of autonomy in accordance with the constitutional and basic law of China.
Xi emphasized central government's commitment to the principle remains unchanged and the resolve remains firm and strong.

The president said he hoped the chief executive can lead Hong Kong forward together with the motherland.
Central government fully supports Lam, who is in Beijing to report on her stewardship, and her administration had made a great start, he continued.
Xi praised the Hong Kong leader for inviting and organizing a delegation of central government officials to provide the territory with fundamentals of 19th  Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress.
In his report to the congress in October, Xi voiced his support for Hong Kong to integrate into the country's development strategy as an inevitable choice for realizing a win-win situation for HKSAR and the mainland.
Lam won the election of the fifth-term chief executive of China's HKSAR on March 26 and took the oath of office on July 1.
