Thousands of protesters rallied in the eastern Indian hill town of Darjeeling on Monday, calling for greater autonomy from the central government. Hundreds of armed security personnel were deployed to police the rally.
Local ethnic Nepalis have been protesting for a month, demanding the establishment of a separate state to protect their own culture and identity.
Clashes between armed forces and protesters have left seven civilians dead and dozens of security personnel wounded.
