Meanwhile. Youth unemployment remains stubbornly high in Italy. One in three young Italians will be jobless and many must leave their homes for opportunities overseas. Ahead of Sunday's national elections, CGTN's Kate Parkinson went to Luiss University in Rome to talk to some college-age voters.
"Hello, I'm Kate. Nice to meet you. Hello. Thank you so much for meeting me. So what do you want the next government to do for young people here in Italy?"
CHIARA MARIOTTINI POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENT "First of all I would like to have more opportunities for young people because young people in Italy have a good preparation about education so they are well prepared. It's not fair that they have to move abroad, in abroad countries, in order to work because I think it's better to have opportunities here, to let young people work in the place where they are born and where they live."
VALERIO COCO ECONOMICS STUDENT "I agree with Chiara, I think that this is the most important thing — that I want only this from the next government, so I need a job. I want to work here in Italy because I am Italian, I am a bit patriotic I know but it's me, it's ok, it's a beautiful thing. I am happy to be Italian, I am happy to work here."
KATE PARKINSON ROME "A lot of young Italians are looking overseas for work because there aren't jobs here. Is that something that you think about?"
FRANCESCA FEO POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENT "That shouldn't be the solution. We shouldn't think that to build a family, to be successful in life I have to go to another country. I mean, in England there are 5000 Italians - young Italians - that are there and are enjoying the life but they could do the same thing here, if they had the chance to do so. So change should come in Italy to give the possibility to young people to make a choice and not just move over there overseas because they have to."
KATE PARKINSON ROME "So what party do you think offers the best opportunities for young people in Italy?"
RICCARDO ANTONUCCI POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENT "I'm not sure about the party because Italy has a really fragmented political environment but I hope sincerely that our political class could find a solution all together in order to face the problem of young people and to give them more opportunities because this is not something that a single party can do but it's something that the whole political society has to do."
