China's top anti-corruption authority said a former senior mainland official in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) has been punished for corruption.
The announcement followed a closed-door meeting of the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) on Monday, just over a week before the CPC's 19th National Congress.
Li Gang, who spent a decade as the deputy director of the Liaison Office in Hong Kong SAR before being appointed to the State Council, was put on probation for one year, the CCDI said in a statement.
Li was given probation for serious disciplinary violations, the statement said, without elaborating.
Last year, the CCDI sent an inspector to monitor the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office that oversees affairs in the two regions.
Meanwhile, the CCDI said a total of 47,005 officials have been punished for violation of party disciplines in the first nine months of 2017.
In September alone, some 6,187 officials were punished.
Awarding an unauthorized allowance or bonus was the most common misdemeanor, followed by giving or accepting gifts and misuse of public vehicles.
The CPC released its eight-point rules on austerity in 2012 to reduce undesirable work practices.
