A large crop of red quinoa has been harvested in Yongchang County, China’s northwest Gansu Province. Quinoa – pronounced ‘keen-wa’ – is a great wheat-free alternative to starchy grains.
It originated in South America and the UN named 2013 “International Quinoa Year” due to the crop’s nutritious content.
Last year, it was successfully planted in Yongchang County. Local farmers planted quinoa using the standard method of modern water-saving agriculture and their incomes are five time greater than before, according to Chen Younghong, director of local quinoa professional farmer's cooperatives.
The beautiful red quinoa harvest scenery is also expected to attract tourists to the local area.
