Tensions between semi-nomadic pastoralists and settled landowners are taking a violent turn in Kenya's central Laikipia highlands. The herders, some armed with spears, others with AK-47s, cut through fences, saying it was necessary to ensure their way of life. But others said their actions left wild animals like elephants, buffaloes, and impalas vulnerable to attack.
