Cape Town Drought: Effect of sluggish economy on South Africans
[]
Cape Town is experiencing a devastating drought. Dam levels have dropped to dangerously low levels once again. Authorities have moved the so-called Day Zero -- the day that the city's taps will run dry -- forward. The critical situation is the aftermath of South Africa's sluggish economy, amid political tensions. South Africa's GDP growth rate saw a sharp drop from 3.3 percent in 2010 to only 0.7 percent in 2017. GDP per capita has continued to fall since 2014, reaching a new low in 2017 with a 1.33 percent decrease. Its unemployment rate stayed high at over 20 percent for almost 8 years, compared to what's considered a relatively "safe" unemployment rate of around 5 percent. Last year, the number of unemployed people reached over 27 percent of the total population. Some observers say politicians have been kept busy with party struggles, leaving little space to deal with other pertinent issues. Cape Town is now projected to run out of water on April 12th.
