We begin with the latest on the China-US trade war. Twenty-four hours have passed since Washington fired the first shot by introducing a tranche of fresh tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods. In response, Chinese authorities have introduced countermeasures. Ma Ke runs us through what happened on Friday.
A statement from China's Commerce Ministry described the US tariff move as "having launched the largest trade war in economic history". Washington put into effect on Friday a 25 percent tariff on 34 billion dollars worth of Chinese goods. And China responded immediately by slamming the same percentage of tariffs on the same amount of US products.
LU KANG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "The US has blatantly violated the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization. When China's interests are compromised, of course, we will strike back."
China has filed a fresh complaint at the World Trade Organization on the US tariffs. But a WTO ruling may not come in time to prevent more escalation. The US had vowed to sanction a total of 500 billion dollars worth of Chinese exports. And 10% of that has already been put on a list. Apart from the 34 billion dollars worth of Chinese goods affected this time around, there are still 16 billion worth of Chinese goods subject to US punishment. And China has vowed to respond in kind if the White House takes the fight to another level.
