European leaders are discussing the migrant crisis at a two-day summit in Brussels. Some countries are taking an increasingly hardline approach to immigration. Hungary even calling it an "invasion". CGTN's Mariam Zaidi is watching developments in Brussels.
MARIAM ZAIDI BRUSSELS "The sun may have been shining outdoors, but indoors at the EU leader's summit, the mood has been grey. Migration policy that has divided the EU, was once again the hot topic of this last summit before the summer. Now here EU leaders are hoping to find a European way, however murky it may seem to control migrants to Europe. Then what the EU said that it wants to do is to fund asylums in north African countries, through having regional disembarkation centers, to then sort refugee from economic migrants, and they also want to add further security to their external border.
Now this is basically the quick fix of a bloc that needs to appease divisions and discontents on migration. And it's the one idea that all due to seem to be getting behind."
ANGELA MERKEL GERMAN CHANCELLOR "Everyone in Europe agrees that it's important to reduce illegal immigration and to stop human traffickers. When we speak about an exchange of European countries and countries of origin, we need to address legal agreements."
MARIAM ZAIDI BRUSSELS "On Brexit, it's more of the same. A lack of progress that EU leaders worried, but the UK Prime Minister Theresa May saw things differently."
THERESA MAY BRITISH PRIME MINISTER "In regards of negotiations on Brexit, I look forward to talking to fellow leaders about the very great progress we made on the withdrawal agreement. And look forward to securing our strong future partnership."
MARIAM ZAIDI BRUSSELS "Brexit is set to be discussed further over breakfast on Friday. MZ, CGTN, Brussels."
