South Africa now has an app tailored to tackle racism. Launched by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, the Zimele Racism Reporting app, or ZiRRA, is giving individuals a chance to report cases of racism countrywide. Julie Scheier has more.
Only a week after its release and ZiRRA is giving a voice to the voiceless. Launched by The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, the new tool hopes to reduce racism around the country.
BONGANI MAKHUBO ANTI-RACISM MANAGER, AHMED KATHRADA FOUNDATION "What we basically want is for people to report incidents of racism as experienced by them or by other people, but it also allows us as an organisation to see the hotspots of racism incidents in South Africa. Now that we have this technology it will help a lot, for instance, it will even reach those who are in the rural areas. On the App itself on the front part of the app where you report a case, you have an option of also attaching sound, or a video or even pictures of the incident, so we receive a full file of the case after which we will be able to assess what happened to this person."
JULIE SCHEIER JOHANNESBURG "ZiRRA has already notched up 180 downloads, and over 17 incidents of racism have been reported. It's a very easy app to use and it gives better idea of the extent and nature of racism in South Africa."
Two decades after the birth of democracy, South Africa is still plagued with incidents of racism.
SAMUEL JACOBS STUDENT "I really think it is a great idea because it can really protect a lot of people from racism, I recommend people to use it, I will definitely use it."
RAPHAEL HARRISON STUDENT "An app like this is very important because it could save somebody's life."
ARITRA UKIL TOURIST "I think it is very important not just in South Africa but across the world, I would like to see the app go worldwide."
The app is still in its pilot phase available only for Android devices. But plans are in order to create an IOS APP. Zirra hopes to encourage more South Africans to speak out about racism and combat prejudice. JS, CGTN, JHB SA.
