China-Arab States Expo 2017: Egyptian exhibitors hope to forge closer trade ties with China

The third China-Arab States Expo is taking place in Yinchuan, the capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Business people from nearly 60 countries are taking part in the biennial event which is aimed at forging closer trade relations with China.

May Karakesy is an Egyptian artist, having worked 11 years at the Islamic Center of Crafts in Cairo. Her first trip to China brings not only excitement but also a mission to link the two civilizations. She says by attending the expo, she aims to share Egyptian art forms with people in China.

China's imports from Egypt soared to more than 600 million US dollars in the first half of this year – an increase of nearly 300 percent year on year. As the only Guest of Honor country at this year's expo, Egypt is showcasing a wide range of products and services to attract more investment from China, and continue their upward momentum.

China is the biggest investor in the development of Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone. Mr Mahfouz M.T. Marzok, vice chairman of the Economic Zone, says that the project will facilitate the presence of foreign investors, especially from China.

Egypt officially joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2015, along with several other Arab countries. It's expected to further boost flows of products and services with China, and strengthen cross-regional connectivity.
