The World Cup has also presented a chance for fans from Nigeria to share their local culture. While the Super Eagles failed to make it past the group stage in Russia, the supporters of the African side showcased their country's love of the game, with their own vivid and eye-catching flair. Mahia Mutua has more.
Under the tower of the Kremlin in the Russian capital, song and dance from Nigeria permeate the air at the famous Red Square. Fanfare from the famous Nigeria Supporters Club, dancers in traditional dress, and songs from back home all on offer here. This, an initiative by Nigeria House, an outfit aimed at showcasing the country during major sporting events.
ABDULLAHI MOHAMMED NIGERIA HOUSE PROJECT DIRECTOR "We have to showcase to the world that we have a lot to offer. It's not just about entertainment. It's also about interpersonal relationships. It's about investment drive. And, of course, about letting people know what we have to offer to the world. The potential we have as a nation and, of course, to improve diplomatic ties -- between Nigeria and the Russian community -- and the entire world."
In the midst of the ongoing tournament, this platform at a major tourist attraction, gives the West African nation -- and other participating teams at the tournament -- a chance to showcase their cultures.
OTUNBA SEGUN RUNSEWE NIGERIA COUNCIL FOR ARTS & CULTURE DIRECTOR "Football is only 90 minutes. We want to tell the world that Nigeria has more to offer, so we've come with a very strong cultural team to showcase our strength as a people, our heritage."
Nigeria have caught many eyes in Russia both on and off the pitch. It's estimated that over 5,000 Nigerians live in Moscow alone. For many living in Russia, this is the closest connection to the West African giant, and they say the experience has been an eye-opener.
"The Nigerians are very energetic and they've brought a special energy here with their performances."
"The groups here were really amazing. I hope their football team could have matched them."
"Being able to represent my country, and to dress like this, to dance here, to see the culture, it is the best thing that could ever happen."
MAHIA MUTUA MOSCOW "In Russia's move to open its doors to the world during this World Cup period, the onus and opportunity fell to nations like Nigeria to present a clear image of itself to the world, an opportunity that the organizers here say was not missed. MM, CGTN, Moscow, Russia."
