Over to the ice, the Winnipeg Jets were looking to do something they hadn't done in 31 years -- win a playoff series. The club holding a 3-1 edge on the Minnesota Wild. The last time the franchise made it past the first round in the post-season was before they moved to Phoenix more than a quarter-century ago. This incarnation of the team has only been in Winnipeg since 2011, after they moved from Atlanta.
And before the game, Mark Scheifele hoping for some karma, giving a puck to a young fan watching warm-ups.
The youngster and the other Jet fans have plenty to cheer about -- as Jacob Trouba scores 31 seconds into the game, and Winnipeg is off and running.
They double the lead five minutes later, off a face-off, the hosts win the draw, Dustin Byfuglien's shot on net is redirected home by Bryan Little. 2-zip.
Winny continues to pour it on, six minutes later, Brandon Tanev causes a turnover and beats Devan Dubnyk with a wrist shot and it's 3-nothing. The 15-thousand in attendance love it -- as do the 15-thousand watching outside on a big screen.
Less than a minute later, they are at it again -- this time it's Joel Armia deflecting a point shot home. The Jets score 4 goals in the first 12 minutes of the game.
They coast the rest of the way -- and Scheifele's good karma -- sees him score another insurance marker on the powerplay early in the third. Winnipeg wins it 5-nothing.
As the Jets wrap up the series in five games -- the first playoff series win for this incarnation of the team.
In other games, Sean Couturier's goal with 1.15 to play was the winner, as Philly beats Pittsburgh. The Flyers still trail the series 3-2. And Colorado lives to fight another day -- as the Avalanche edge top-seeds Nashville 2-1, thanks to a late goal. The Predators still hold a 3-2 lead overall.
