The blazing meteorite that illuminated the night sky Friday evening in southwest China's Yunnan Province, has been found this morning in the province's Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna. Amateur video online showed that the palm-sized meteorite is square-round in shape and weighs around 500-600 grams. Experts will travel to Xishuangbanna to conduct further identification. It is very difficult for a meteorite to be found, thus making it extremely valuable for research on stars and planets.
VOICE OF JIANG WEI, DEPUTY DIRECTOR PROFESSIONAL COMMITTEE FOR METEORITE SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION "We haven't actually seen the meteorite, but based on the pictures and videos, we can basically identify it as a stone meteorite. We still need further identification. As for its volume, based on yesterday's video, there would be a scattered fallen range. It also has a lot of smoke on its tail, and a lot of flaming materials, so the scale can be large. Now we only found one piece, but more could be found later. That's why we are rushing there." But we are certain that this group of meteorites has very high research value. It is very fresh, and was barely contaminated, so the research value can be very high. In terms of collecting value, it could also be very high since we did not find any meteorite last time in Shangri-la.
