Sports Scene returns with basketball from the NBA, as injury plagued Boston got some more bad news when the Celtics found out Kyrie Irving will undergo what's described as a "minimally invasive procedure" on his sore left knee that has kept him out since March 11th. But Boston are still second in the East and tried to ignore their problems when they traveled to Portland for a tough road game against the Trail Blazers.
We pick it up midway through the first quarter. Damian Lillard stops, considers his options and then takes and makes a three. He'd finish with 26 points.
On the next play, Al Horford does pretty much the same thing except from a bit closer, and it's tied at 12.
Three minutes into the second quarter, CJ McCollum dials long distance for three of his 26 points. Blazers lead by eight. But the Celtics keep it close and Marcus Morris is able to connect on the three while being fouled, for a chance at a four point play.
hird quarter and Portland use some good ball movement to open a lane as Lillard makes a brilliant pass to Jusuf Nurkic for the jam. 59-51 Trail Blazers. With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Boston lead, but McCollum is able to get inside for the lay-up And One to put Portland back on top.
A minute and a half left to play and Jayson Tatum turns the corner and gets to the hoop to make it 98-96 Celtics. And Morris would help put it to bed with three of his game-high 30 points, as Boston go on to win 105-100.
In other games, East leaders Toronto beat Brooklyn, Steph Curry returned for Golden State and scored 29 points before leaving in the third quarter with an MCL sprain, Lebron James had 27 as Cleveland blew out Phoenix, Russell Westbrook scored 29 points in OKC's win, San Antonio edged Utah in overtime as LaMarcus Aldridge had a career-high 45 points, and Minnesota clinched their first winning record in 13 years by beating New York.
