France Nuclear Disposal Plan: Police clear nuclear waste protest site in pre-dawn swoop
[]
French police have launched a surprise operation to evict protesters from a site earmarked for storage of nuclear waste in the country's east.
The interior ministry announced this after the operation was underway. Scores of police moved in before daylight to evict activists and was backed up by an earthmover. The plan to store long-life nuclear waste 500 meters below ground in impermeable clay has not yet gotten government approval. Local groups and environmentalists are opposing this proposal.
