Egypt's Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, has visited the scene of a gruesome bomb attack targeting tourists near the Pyramids of Giza. The explosion killed four and injured roughly a dozen others. It comes as the country's travel industry struggles to overcome fears of a growing insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula and other security threats. CGTN's Adel El Mahrouky has the story.
Despite the highest security alert, and recalling all its police and army personnel to secure the holidays season, terrorism has once again struck Egypt. A bomb planted on the side of a touristic road exploded next to a bus carrying 14 Vietnamese tourists and two Egyptians.
MOSTAFA MADBOULY EGYPTIAN PRIME MINISTER "Sometimes attacks such as this one can occur, it may even happen again in the future, and there isn't a country in the world where we can say is 100 percent safe. We are trying to contain the impact of this incident as much as possible, but the most important thing is to provide medical care to all those who were injured. We give our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in this incident, whether Egyptian or the tourists who died."
Three Vietnamese tourists and an Egyptian tour guide died in the attack. Egyptian officials and the Vietnamese ambassador to Cairo rushed to the hospital to follow up on the injured conditions.
NASHWA EL DEEB MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT "I came here as soon as I heard about the accident, it's our duties as MPs. Terrorism has no religion, it has no nation. We've seen France and other countries, we are in a global war against them. Egypt is no exception, and hopefully we will continue down this road till the end."
Since 2015's Russian Plane crash in Sharm EL Sheikh, Egypt has been struggling to regain global trust as a safe destination. With the tourism sector growing by more that's 50%, 2018 has been a great year. But the attack may ruin all the progress made this year. No wonder, Egypt's tourism minister left the hospital speechless.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO "The attack has disrupted Egypt's holiday season. And it comes at the end of a year where tourism was picking up. And this industry here can no longer sustain any further damage. Adel EL Mahrouky CGTN CAIRO."
