Chinese FM Wang Yi meets new Philippine foreign secretary

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his new Philippine counterpart Alan Peter Cayetano in Beijing on Thursday.

During the bilateral meeting, the two ministers agreed that bilateral ties entered a period of fast development once relations were normalized late last year. Ever since then, the two nations have signed 22 cooperation agreements on infrastructure, trade, agriculture and combating illicit drugs.

The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and on how to settle maritime disputes in the South China Sea. China said it's ready to work closely with the Philippines this year during its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Wang said China is willing to throw full support behind the Philippines holding the rotating presidency of the ASEAN in 2017.

He said China would like to work with the Philippines to deepen China-ASEAN relations, properly handle South China Sea issues, jointly safeguard stability in the South China Sea and maintain the good momentum of development in China-ASEAN relations.
