At the Beijing Zoo, the first lady fed Gu Gu the giant panda and learned about his nutrition and training while at the zoo.
The Beijing Zoo is home to eight giant pandas, including one set of twins, but Gu Gu is the "star of the zoo," according to zoo director.
She greeted a group of local school children waving Chinese and American stick flags in front of a panda enclosure. After watching the children sing two songs, Melania thanked the children and gifted each of them a stuffed bald eagle, the national bird symbol of the US.
“Thank you very much,” she said.
The first lady then signed a poster of the panda, writing, “Thank you to the Beijing Zoo! Wonderful to meet Gu Gu!”
Later in the day, Melania is expected to visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China before returning to the United States, where she will attend a military family event in Alaska.
Melania also visited Banchang Elementary School in Beijing's Dongcheng District accompanied by Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
