Over to Spain where La Liga leaders Barcelona were on the road to face lowly Las Palmas where they were expected to restore their seven point cushion over Atletico Madrid at the top of the table. But while the Catalans were able to extend their league unbeaten run to 33 games, a controversial penalty would see Lionel's Messi's set piece strike cancelled out for a draw.
Messi fires Barca ahead in the 21st minute with a thunderous free-kick into the top corner, but third from bottom Las Palmas pull themselves back into the game with a penalty by Jonathan Calleri three minutes into the second half. It was awarded after Lucas Digne was judged to have handled the ball after it hit the post and was the first time Barca have given away a penalty in the league in more than two years.
The referee's decisions left the visitors and their coach Ernesto Valverde furious, especially after Las Palmas goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola was not punished for appearing to handle outside of the area and it would end 1-1.
Barca increased their lead to five points over Atletico ahead of their pivotal meeting Sunday, with the second place side in good form having won their last eight games in all competitions. Real Madrid are 15 points from the top after losing 1-0 to Espanyol on Tuesday.
