A top UN migrant official says the refugee crisis in South America is comparable to what the world has witnessed in the Mediterranean. More than two-million Venezuelan economic and political migrants have fled the country. Almost half crossed into Colombia. CGTN's Michelle Begue has more from Bogota.
MICHELLE BEGUE BOGOTA "35,000 Venezuelans have been crossing the border daily into Colombia. Thousands of others continue onto other countries. (So Ecuador and Peru on August 18 decided to restrict and start to control the border, saying Venezuelans could only cross if they have a passport. Usually they would cross with just a state ID. So many Venezuelans are now looking towards smuggling, looking to cross illegally to try to get out of the country. Let's take a look at what they are saying."
"It's not because we want to go, we are here out of necessity, because we are dying there in Venezuela. What is the point of sending money to Venezuela if we can't get anything? And the price of everything tomorrow is double of what that was today. That's not a life. There was no medicine, there was no public transportation."
MICHELLE BEGUE BOGOTA "The director of migration in Colombia is hosting a meeting between Peru, Colombia and Ecuador to talk about this crisis. He says something that everyone needs to work together to solve not just Venezuelan and Colombia and especially because of concern of illegal crossing, more and more Venezuelan is going to try to go to the areas of the border. They don't have any officials at the border. These areas geographically are very tough where there are rainfalls, there are mountains. And it can be very dangerous for families who are crossing with their children. So the director says this needs to be talked about. On Monday and Tuesday, these countries will be holding a meeting.
