US-DPRK Dialogue: Chinese, US presidents exchange views on Korean Peninsula
[]
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, have spoken on the phone regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula. President Xi said he appreciates Trump's desire to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue politically, and China is committed to the removal of nuclear weapons from the region, and to the resolution of tensions through dialogue. He said he hopes talks between the US and the DPRK begin as soon as possible. The Chinese president urged all parties concerned to show goodwill and avoid affecting or interfering with the improving situation on the peninsula.
Trump, for his part, said President Xi was proven right in his assertion that Washington and Pyongyang had to sit down for talks. He said a high-level meeting with DPRK officials met the interests of all parties, adding that the US appreciated China's role in the matter, and would maintain close contact with Beijing.
