Indonesia is joining the festivities for this year's double 11 sales. Considered one of the largest digital retail events globally, local Indonesian companies will be able to take advantage of the Chinese market, by introducing their products to consumers in the country. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia has more from Jakarta.
This year's shopping festival, Singles Day, is a big one for Indonesia. Chinese e-commerce website Alibaba has collaborated with the Indonesian government to sell five local Indonesian products through its platform. All of the products are food-based and one of them is the popular instant noodles sold by Indofood.
YOUNG YU, REGIONAL MANAGER INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS DIVISION, INDOFOOD "With the advanced e-commerce in China and the increasing popularity of this double 11. We are actually hoping to ride on this wave of excitement through our participation there. We hope this event will be an eye opener for all of the Chinese consumers and of course also the internet users. During this double 11 sale this year, we hope Indomie products will be sold in several different e-commerce platforms in China offering specials which will be available for purchase."
The competition is tight. Indofood's products will be sold alongside 180 thousand other products from China and other countries all at a discounted price. In 2017, the sales managed to bring in more than 30 billion US dollars in under 24 hours.
SHINTA KAMDANI DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON, INDONESIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE "Indonesian brands are also starting to go global and we want to support that. We've seen many of our local products entering new markets globally and China is a very very important market for us. Obviously with a population that size and I think this will help to increase more exports of Indonesian products into China."
The project proves to be beneficial for both parties. Indonesian companies are able to observe how their products are being received in the Chinese market and in turn open up more opportunities to present their other products internationally.
SILKINA AHLUWALIA JAKARTA, INDONESIA "The website will also include tourism information along with each Indonesian product sold. This is one of the largest digital retail event of the year. Showcasing what Indonesia has to offer in terms of products and tourism will significantly boost the country's economy. Silkina Ahluwalia, CGTN, Jakarta."
