Japan has denounced Pyongyang’s threat against the US territory of Guam and has vowed to work with the US to jointly strengthen their defense systems.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the alliance would discuss deterrence options against the DPRK on August 17, when the two countries’ foreign and defense ministers are set to meet in Washington.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan could legally intercept a DPRK missile headed towards Guam, if it was judged to be an existential threat to Japan. However, experts have noted that Tokyo does not have the military capabilities to do so.
