DPRK leader Kim Jong Un has wrapped up his latest visit to China. It's the third time in as many months he's met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. They promised to forge closer ties and work to make the region safer. Gary Anglebrandt has details.
"As close as one family." That's how DPRK leader Kim Jong Un described Pyongyang's relations with Beijing in his latest meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The two leaders have now met three times in three months.
The Chinese President hails it a history-making move. Xi says the DPRK will now embark on a new journey focused on economic development. China will share its own experiences and work with the DPRK to build both countries' socialist causes.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "China is supportive of the DPRK's efforts to grow its economy and improve its people's livelihoods. We support the DPRK's pursuit of the path of development that suits its own conditions."
Kim says his visit serves as a good opportunity to strengthen friendship with Xi and bolster the nations' bilateral relationship. He says he will work with China to lift ties to a new level.
Kim also visited China's National Agricultural Technology Innovation park and Beijing's rail traffic control center. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang reiterated that Beijing has abided by UN sanction resolutions in current cooperation with the DPRK.
The two leaders also discussed the Korean Peninsula situation. Kim says he will work to maintain peace and stability for the region and the world. The summit comes just about a week after Kim's meeting with US President Donald Trump in Singapore over denuclearization.
