Hurricane Nate has made US landfall at the mouth of the Mississippi River on the southeastern tip of the state of Louisiana.
The Category 1 storm is heading north at a speed of some 30 kilometers per hour, packing winds of 140 kilometers per hour.
Before making landfall, the National Hurricane Center had issued a hurricane warning from Grand Isle in Louisiana, to the Alabama-Florida border.
A state of emergency has been declared for over two dozen Florida counties and for the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Nate is the fourth major storm to strike the United States in less than two months. It has already caused widespread flooding in Central America, killing at least 30 people.
