Updated 19:52, 22-Aug-2019
We start off today at the Beijing International Book Fair where 5G is one of the buzzwords this year. The world's second largest publishing event lifted its curtains in the capital city on Wednesday. According to the organizers, the fair is also focusing on the latest ways in which technology can transform education. Shen Li tells us more.
Now in its 26th year, the BIBF goes beyond the publishing industry, and forges crucial links with professionals from other business sectors.
Connectivity is everything nowadays. Not just in the publishing industry, but also extending to innovative cultural and educational products, which in turn will find their way to book lovers.
LIN LIYING DIRECTOR, 2019 BEIJING INT'L BOOK FAIR "The key word for this year's book fair is convergence. Convergence with new technologies like 5G and convergence between different industries. It's more than just a platform for publishing houses shaking hands and making deals. Here at BIBF content providers, traditional publishers and distributors will have plenty of opportunities to explore new business models, channels and technologies."
SHEN LI CHINA INT'L EXHIBITION CENTER, BEIJING "For the first time in its history the fair has a special zone devoted to '5G-plus reading.' The aim is to showcase what the next generation of mobile internet connectivity can do for the businesses of reading, writing and publishing."
Here visitors can experience new technologies such as virtual immersion reading, discover more details within a book using interactive technology and more.
Exhibitors from the new generation of edutech and e-learning products are also illustrating the convergence of publishing, entertainment, Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies in China.
First time exhibitor VIP Kid, a Chinese education start-up and one of the world's biggest online education companies, is targeting the new generation of parents keen to support their children's education and 5G is the next breakthrough they've been waiting for.
SU HAIFENG HEAD OF VIPKID CHINESE PROGRAM "As an online education company, we have benefited greatly from 4G technology, which has opened up new horizons for children's learning habits, making them no longer confined within the four walls of a classroom, but a more personal, customer made experience. With the commercialization of 5G technology just around the corner, which means less time delays and smoother browsing experience, it will definitely help companies to explore innovative ways of education and develop new business modes."
The BIBF is organized by the China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation and runs at China International Exhibition Center in Shunyi district until Sunday.
