The World Buddhism Forum is scheduled in China next month. How can Chinese Buddhism progress under the challenges of commercialization? And how can Chinese Buddhism regain its momentum to thrive? In today's special series Beyond the Wall, CGTN's correspondent Han Bin talks with monks who are embracing modern technology.
MASTER XIANJI LONGQUAN TEMPLE "To open to the outside world is a must choice for Buddhism to develop."
HAN BIN Beijing "How's life here in the temple?"
MASTER XIANJI LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Well...Surprisingly busy. Before I joined the temple, I never thought about I would live such a busy life. But it's so fulfilling. To be a monk is the pursuit to happiness of others. It's not about yourself. It's about devotion. It's about for the well-being of others."
MASTER XIANFAN LONGQUAN TEMPLE "This is our second-generation robot monk. You can chat with him."
"All right. Hello, Xian Er, I'm Han Bin."
"Hello, Teacher Han Bin."
"Ok, thanks. -What do you want me to do?"
MASTER XIANFAN LONGQUAN TEMPLE "He's taller than the first-generation robot. Some of his language and personality make people feel the robot is just like them. This is the ink painting animation of the 24 solar terms created by our animation team. They are all hand drawn one by one, and then synthesized. First of all, I think it's because of his image. The cuteness is very much in line with Chinese aesthetics. It lets people feel that he's approachable and amiable. Then, his thoughts and mind are so kind and understanding. And he's never going to use any malicious language to offend you. So when you communicate with him, you can feel a kind of warmth from him."
"The bitter sea is boundless. Looking back is the shore."
MASTER XIANFAN LONGQUAN TEMPLE "This is our clay animation shooting area. Technically, this approach is quite new. Through these animation images, these products may be more in line with people's aesthetics, and they may be more approachable to young people today. This is the office for the lay Buddhists. Here's an ink painting animation section and there's also a section for photo editing."
HAN BIN BEIJING "Have all these products been put online?"
MASTER XIANFAN LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Yes. These are all manuscripts of ink painting. I think we have broken through some of the traditional concepts in Buddhism popularization, beyond the limitations of space and time."
HAN BIN BEIJING "Longquan Temple is known for embracing modern technology, and its own approach is just writing Buddhist doctrine. Xian'er is among many of these innovations, and this little monk's various incarnations help to make Chinese Buddhism more accessible to the public far beyond the temple walls."
MASTER XIANQING LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Here is a library of the Tripitaka, the earliest collection of Buddhist teachings, the foundation of the Buddhist philosophy. It is also the basis of our Buddhist practices. They are the most important Buddhist inscriptions. There are more than 20 Chinese versions of the Tripitaka. We are digitalizing all existing Tripitaka, doing electronic identification and proofreading."
ZHANG MINLI, LAY BUDDHIST LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Most of these scriptures are unpunctuated. We use AI technology to give them punctuation."
MASTER XIANQING LONGQUAN TEMPLE "This process can help make the scriptures more complete and accurate."
HAN BIN BEIJING "How much efficiency has it improved?"
MASTER XIANQING LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Technology has greatly improved efficiency and the spreading of Buddhism. In fact, science and technology are about the laws of the physical world. Buddhism is about the laws of the spiritual and psychological world. Given today's rapid development of science, our knowledge of the spiritual world needs to be more scientific. The fundamental spirit of Buddhism lies in its spirit of compassion and wisdom. Today with the power of science, this spiritual world will be better spread."
MASTER XIANFAN LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Since we now have an opportunity to use this kind of technology to make Xian'er popular, it's a breakthrough for all of us."
MASTER XIANJI LONGQUAN TEMPLE "Enlightenment is the ultimate goal, as a monk, I think that's everyone's dream to achieve enlightenment."
