Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Beijing. On Sunday, the two discussed the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, as China reaffirmed its commitment to its strategic partnership with Iran. CGTN's Ren Xueqian reports.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is on a quest to gather reassurances to salvage the Iran Nuclear Deal reached in 2015.
The official's meeting with his counterpart in Beijing comes just days after President Trump announced America's withdrawal from the landmark deal. It's the first stop in Zarif's multinational tour that will see him meet with officials from Europe and Russia.
MOHAMMAD JAVAD ZARIF IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER "We hope our visit to Beijing and to other signatories in the next few days will reach a consensus on the future plan of the deal."
When speaking to China's Minister Wang, Zarif said Iran is willing to work and communicate with all parties supporting the comprehensive agreement.
Wang said China remains committed to safeguarding the international agreement, calling the Iran Nuclear Deal an outcome of multilateral efforts.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "China is the first country that you're visiting on this trip. I hope and believe that this trip will strengthen member states', including China's understanding of Iran's circumstances and initiatives it has taken. We believe China will safeguard Iran's rightful national interests as well as actively contribute to its regional peace."
According to Wang, as one of the signatories to the deal, China will continue to coordinate with all sides with fairness and objectivity.
The Iran deal topped the agenda, but the two officials also discussed cooperation in the areas of communications and infrastructure, under China's Belt and Road Initiative. Wang and Zarif agree the two countries share an important friendship, one with deep ties in the areas of trade and the economy. It's a partnership that will likely grow deeper, with Iran becoming an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
