During a rally for Republican senator Luther Strange in Alabama on September 22, US President Donald Trump verbally attacked NFL (National Football League) players who have kneeled in protest of racial inequality during the national anthem.
Alluding to former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Trump urged NFL owners to "fire" players who did not stand during the national anthem.
Two days later, players and sometimes entire teams – kneeled, locked arms, or remained in the locker room during the playing of the anthem in an act of unity and defiance against Trump's words.
In an international game at Wembley Stadium, at least seven Ravens players and more than a dozen Jaguars players kneeled during the national anthem before the start of the teams' game while the rest of the players stood locked arm-in-arm in response to Trump's comments this week that NFL owners should fire those who take a knee during the national anthem.
In contrast to Trump's suggestion, the Ravens issued a statement from owner Steve Bisciotti minutes after kickoff, saying, "We recognize our players' influence. We respect their demonstration and support them 100 percent. All voices need to be heard. That's democracy in its highest form."
