Ukraine is determined to conduct reforms to "have a clear schedule of what must be done by 2020 to meet the NATO membership criteria,” said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who met with visiting NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Kiev on Monday.
Ukraine will begin discussions with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on an action plan to get it into the US-led alliance, said Poroshenko said.
No dates were issued for when talks on a membership action plan might begin.
Now some 69 percent of Ukrainians want to join NATO, according to a June poll by Democratic Initiatives Foundation.
With the prospect of NATO on its border, Russia says membership for Ukraine would not promote stability and security.
