The longest railway tunnel in north Africa, the Gantas railway tunnel in Algeria, saw a successful breakthrough on Monday after six and a half years of construction.
The hazardous geological conditions in the mountainous area made the construction process challenging, which prompted the project to be halted once for over a year.
It was only resumed after China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd. (CCECC) conducted free test drills and persuaded the proprietor to adopt Chinese standard construction plans.
The Gantas railway tunnel is a two-tube tunnel with a total length of 14.68 kilometers.
