Cyril Ramaphosa was elected president of South Africa in a parliamentary vote on Thursday.
He took the oath of office a day after embattled president Jacob Zuma announced he was stepping down under pressure from the ruling African National Congress (ANC), bringing an end to his nine scandal-plagued years in power.
Ramaphosa said he would work hard "not to disappoint the people of South Africa" in brief remarks after he was elected.

"The issues that you have raised, issues that have to do with corruption, issues of how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with state capture are issues that are on our radar screen," he said.
Ramaphosa, a 65-year-old businessman, was elected as President of the ANC in December 2017.
Ramaphosa's first state of the nation address was expected to take place on Friday.
