Back to China where for the fourth year in a row, Shanghai will host a US college basketball Pac-12 China Game that sees the University of California - Berkeley hosting Yale University. This contest is part of a long-term push to boost cultural exchanges between schools, sports organizations, and people from the two nations.
The pre-game press conference at the Shanghai Disneyland Resort featured a lot of flair and fanfare, with the Cal Golden Bears looking to go on the prowl, and prove the Yale Bulldogs' bark is worse than their bite. After Jamie Zaninovich, Deputy Commissioner of the Pacific-12 Conference, and David Liu, Vice President of event sponsor AliSports, delivered their opening remarks, the coaches and players from the two teams would take to the podium and offer their thoughts on this weekend's game. Berkeley guard Zhao Tianjian, known these days as James Zhao, is in the spotlight for being the first competitor from China to return home as a member of a squad taking part in this contest. And his side, along with their Ivy League guests, are finding it to be quite an eye-opening journey.
JAMES ZHAO UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA GUARD "To come back with my team is definitely a humbling experience. A lot of them had never left the country, and they're new to all this, so coming to China is a whole different experience. And to be there and help them with whatever they need, and to teach them about my country and my culture, is definitely a blessing."
ALEX COPELAND YALE UNIVERSITY GUARD "Just now we met a lot of kids from the Yao Ming Foundation and that experience was surreal. I think anytime we meet kids in America it's always really humbling, but to realize that we can be a source of inspiration for kids across the world is something that is honestly surreal, so that's definitely one of the most interesting and really memorable things that we've done so far."
