Meanwhile, business leaders are gathered in Tianjin at the ongoing China Green Companies Summit to discuss the rapidly expanding Artificial Intelligence sector and other issues. AI sector insiders say they're prepared to flourish in the future despite ongoing trade tensions between China and the United States. CGTN's Sun Ye more.
Things boil down to the world's two biggest economies when it comes to Artificial Intelligence.
LIANG JIAEN, PRESIDENT UNISOUND "The winner in AI development and competition will be China or the US. That's my judgment. The US has better groundwork technologies but China has advantages in terms of the scale of data it has, as well as imaginative usage of the technology."
LI ZHIFEI, FOUNDER & CEO MOBVOI "The US has a larger pool of talent but there are more application scenarios in China, and a huge pool of data in China."
China is fast catching up even though it lags behind the US in foundation AI technology.
YU KAI, FOUNDER & CEO HORIZON ROBOTICS "We see the discrepancy and have been trying to build processors for a few years now. It's work that makes less money but is very important."
Yu says that making home-grown processors is a decision that's proven to be right, particularly in light of US penalties on Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE.
YU KAI, FOUNDER & CEO HORIZON ROBOTICS "This might even affect us positively since our value is recognized."
Horizon Robotics isn't the only visionary in the sector. China last year launched an ambitious plan to lead the global AI sector, allocating more than 150 billion US dollars for the initiative. In addition, the Ministry of Education last week released a detailed action plan to cultivate the world's best AI talent. The plan aims for China to be the center of AI innovation by 2030.
